Using your Chirpie
How do I set off the alarm?
Pull out the pin (the loop at the top). The siren and a flashing strobe light start straight away and keep going until you stop them.
If your Chirpie came with a thin plastic insulating sheet, remove it before first use.
How do I stop the siren?
Push the pin back into the alarm. The siren and strobe stop as soon as the pin is back in.
How loud is it?
Every Chirpie is rated 130 dB. That’s loud enough to be heard from a long way off and to get people’s attention fast.
Does it need a phone, an app or a subscription?
No. The Chirpie, Chirpie Infinity and Chirpie Infinity Fusion work completely on their own. The Chirpie Link can also connect to your phone by Bluetooth to trigger your phone’s built-in Emergency SOS, but its siren and light work with or without a phone. There’s no app and no subscription for any model.
How does the light work?
- Chirpie (original): the strobe light flashes with the siren.
- Chirpie Infinity and Infinity Fusion: press and hold the side button for a torch. Let go to turn it off.
- Chirpie Link: press the side button once for the torch, again for strobe, and a third time to turn it off. The light turns itself off after 3 minutes.

Battery and charging
How long does the battery last?
- Chirpie (original): runs on two CR2032 coin batteries, with up to a year on standby.
- Chirpie Infinity, Infinity Fusion and Link: a built-in rechargeable battery that sounds the alarm for up to 90 minutes on a full charge.
How do I charge it, and how long does it take?
The Infinity, Infinity Fusion and Link charge with a USB-C cable. The Infinity and Fusion charge in about an hour, and the Link in about 1 to 2 hours. The small light glows red while charging and turns green when it’s full.
How do I know the battery is low?
- Rechargeable models: the small red light flashes 10 times when you pull the pin or press the side button. Time to charge it.
- Chirpie (original): a steady, continuous beep means it’s time to change the batteries.
How do I change the batteries in the original Chirpie?
- Remove the cover.
- Rotate the pin to open the housing.
- Take out the old batteries and fit two new CR2032 batteries.
- Put the cover back on.
Chirpie Link and your phone
How do I pair the Chirpie Link with my phone?
- Hold the side button for 3 seconds until you hear a beep. The Link is now in pairing mode.
- On your phone, open Settings > Bluetooth and select “SOS personal alarm”.
- The Link beeps again when it’s paired.
Step-by-step help and troubleshooting: Chirpie Link setup guide.
Which phones does the Chirpie Link work with?
The Link is designed for iPhone 8 or later (iOS 12 or later) and Android 8.0 or later. The phone SOS feature depends on your phone’s make, model and software, and is controlled by Apple and Google. On Samsung phones running One UI 6 or later, the trigger is unlikely to work while the phone is locked. The siren and light always work, whatever phone you have.
What happens when I pull the pin on the Chirpie Link?
The siren and strobe start straight away. If the pin stays out for about 10 seconds, the Link triggers your phone’s built-in Emergency SOS. Depending on your phone and how its Emergency SOS is set up, your phone can then call emergency services and share your location with your emergency contacts.
Can I call for help without the siren?
Yes. Press the side button 5 times quickly to trigger your phone’s Emergency SOS without the siren. Your phone’s own SOS may still make a sound.
How do I turn the phone SOS off, or back on?
Press the side button twice quickly, then press and hold until you hear two beeps. This switches the Link’s phone SOS off. The siren and light still work. Do the same again to switch it back on.
My Chirpie Link won’t reconnect after charging. What do I do?
After charging, hold the side button for 3 seconds to turn Bluetooth back on. It reconnects to your phone and beeps when it’s connected.
Legal and safety
Is a personal alarm legal to carry in Australia?
Yes. A personal alarm is legal to carry in every state and territory, and you don’t need a permit. That makes it a simple alternative to pepper spray, which is restricted or banned in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, legal in WA only with reasonable grounds, and on trial in the NT until 31 December 2026.
This is general information, not legal advice. Safe-Life’s guide has the details for each state: Is pepper spray illegal in Australia?
